Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 5 wickets to clinch ACC’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2017. Snehan Jayasuriya was awarded man of the match for his magical off break bowling spell where he recorded figures of 3/22 in 6 overs. Charith Asalanka was awarded man of the series for his stellar run in the tournament in which he accumulated 338 runs from 5 matches.
Opting to bat first, Pakistan lost wickets in a flurry and were struggling at 42/4 in one stage. Pakistan Skipper Mohammad Rizwan, who is coming into this game on the back of a century in semi finals, started his innings cautiously but fell prey to Snehan Jayasuriya’s burst along with Khushdil Shah (20) and Zafar Gohar (0). Pakistan were not even allowed to build a 50 run partnership in this innings by the Lankan bowlers and they eventually bundled out for a paltry 133 in 42.1 overs. Pakistan’s batting collapse came in the competition at a stage when it shouldn’t have happened and they paid the price for it. Chamika Karunarathne and Wannidu de Silva picked up 2 scalps each.
Chasing a below par score of 134, the Lankans know that they didn’t have to try fancy things to reach their destination. The in-form Sadeera Samarawickrama opened the innings with some delightful strokes en-route to his 42-ball 45. Snehan Jayasuriya’s indifferent form with the bat continued as he departed for 7 runs. Tournament’s top run scorer and man of the series award winner Charith Asalanka failed to score 50+ runs for the only time in this series as he fell prey to the medium pace of Sameen Gul. However, Kithruwan Vithanage and Wannidu de Silva remained unbeaten on 20 and 22 to take their side home comfortably in just 23.5 overs.
