Messi Wins Sixth Ballon d’Or Award

Lionel Messi won a record sixth men’s Ballon d’Or award at a ceremony in Paris on Monday, while Megan Rapinoe won the women’s title. A day after scoring his 614th career goal for Barcelona.

Virgil van Dijk was second- one of four Liverpool players in the top seven, including Sadio Mane in fourth. Juventus and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the award five times, was third in the voting.

Messi’s and Ronaldo’s 10-year grip on the prestigious individual award organized by France Football magazine was ended last year by Luka Modric.

But Messi was back on top of his game over the past 12 months. Messi scored 36 times last season en route to the Spanish Liga title, and was the Champions League top scorer.

The Barcelona number 10 previously won the award in 2009, 2010, 2011 and in 2012 before claiming his fifth Ballon d’Or in 2015. This latest honour comes after he also claimed FIFA’s equivalent award, The Best, in September.
