After talking with new coach Edgardo Bauza, Lionel Messi has decided to return to the Argentinian national team, just in time for World Cup Qualifiers against Uruguay and Venezuela that are only weeks away.
It has been a rough summer for the Albiceleste, falling in the final of the Copa America Centenario and recently being kicked out of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, all amidst institutional instability and key players like Messi leaving in protest.
“I love my country and the Albiceleste too much,” Messi said.
“There are too many existing problems in Argentine football right now and it wasn’t my intention to create one more.”
As for the reasons behind his shock retirement made in June, the Barcelona No. 10 recognised that leaving the national team, and now announcing his return, were decisions only reached after much consideration.
“A lot of things went through my mind on that day and I seriously considered leaving for good, but I want to bring joy to Argentina and fight to fix things from the inside.”
